| Test and clean smoke detectors monthly and replace batteries at least twice a year. | |
| Store matches and lighters out of sight and reach of children. | |
| Don't overload electrical outlets or run cords underneath rugs. | |
| Keep space heaters at least three feet from furniture and drapes. | |
| Clean the lint screen on your clothes dryer before each use. | |
| Have your furnace inspected every year. Change filters several times each year. | |
| Store flammable materials and chemicals safely away from sources of heat. | |
| Clean fireplace, coal stove and wood stove chimneys every year. | |
| Store firewood at least 30 feet from your home. |
| Never leave cooking unattended! | |
| Never leave burning candles unattended! | |
| Use flashlights for emergency lights. | |
| Burn candles in fireproof containers. | |
| Keep combustibles well away from heat sources. | |
| Have your fireplace/stovepipe professionally cleaned. | |
| Make sure fireplace screens fully enclose the hearth opening. | |
| Do not remove fireplace/stove ashes, until they are cold. |
| Cover smoke alarms in the vicinity of construction work and shop projects during the work, make sure to inspect the area on an on-going basis, so you can immediately discover fires, and remove the covers as soon as the work is done or when you leave the area. | |
| Place smoke detectors outside kitchens (at least 8" out from doorways). | |
| Locate work place cooking appliances, such as toasters and popcorn makers far enough from detectors that any smoke will not trigger the alarm inadvertently. | |
| Stay with food until it is done cooking! | |
| If your smoke alarm is connected to a monitoring company, make sure you advise them of the problem. |
